An Cailleach Bhearra, or the Hag of Beara, is a wise woman figure embedded in the physical and mental landscape of western Ireland and Scotland. The Cailleach's (pronounced Ca-lock or Cay-luck) roots lie in pre-Christian Ireland, and stories of her relationship with that rugged landscape and culture still abound. She had a love affair with a sea god and her petrified body overlooks the Ballycrovane Harbour, from which she is reborn at the beginning of each of her many lives. Leanne O'Sullivan's poems explore the human origins from which the legend grew.

I wasn't paying close enough attention when I purchased the book because I was excited just to find something about this ancient goddess, so I didn't realize the book was poems and not a text. My bad. However, the book is very nice quality and the poems are well done. Recommend for anyone interested in Cailleach.

I wasn't aware this was a book of poems. O'Sullivan is an accomplished poet and herstorian but the Hag's pervasive longing left me feeling off-balance, craving a little more green to blend with her blues. Moody and sensual the book is a gem. Prepare to get lost in terrains of pathos and isolation where the body's memory brings little relief.

Have never purchased the book of poetry in my adult life. Until now. While researching Allihies where a friend is from, I came across a YouTube video of Leanne O'Sullivan Reading from this and also her latest book, "The Mining Road."
Totally smitten. Beautiful, powerful words from a beautiful mind, a beautiful woman from a beautiful corner of this earth. Well, I did warn you, I am smitten! Buy her books, you will not be disappointed.
