I learned about Robert Service on the first page of the first chapter of Louis L'Amour's wonderful memoir, Education of a Wandering Man. L'Amour sprinkled all sorts of references in his book for the curious, and upon my second reading this one got the best of me, so I got this book - I'm so glad I did. This is a truly wonderful book of poems. Some are rugged and have a homespun feel; some are as beautiful and full of imagery of any other great poetry I've read.

There is no pretense here, and these verses are accessible to anyone. If you've ever wanted to get into poetry but thought it was out of reach, begin here. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I also recommend L'Amour's own book of poems, Smoke From This Alter.

I recently purchased this collection for my Dad's 83rd Birthday. He had often reminisced about reciting, memorizing the works of Robert Service, as a teenager, with his Dad. The beloved book had been lost or perhaps discarded during the sale of my Dad's parents' home. I was elated to have been able to acquire this collection for my Dad, now, as he keeps it on his kitchen table, reads it every day, and these poems seem to give him a great boost of wonderful memories and inspiration. After many years of flannel shirts, gift cards, pajamas - - this gift of Robert Service's works was the best gift ever!!! Thank You!!

Robert Service is the master of the north, and in this anthology, he proves it. Whether it is in famous works or in lesser known poems, Service paints the harsh, beautiful landscape of the Arctic like no one else. He makes the Northern Lights come alive. His experiences as an ambulance driver in WWI also gave him insight into the terror of war, and the poems from this period, also included, are wonderful, if at times painful to read. Even if you don't care for poetry that much, you'll love this collection.
