Having enjoyed the literary casserole of paranormal mystery, humor, and romance that is Nearly Departed (Deadwood Book ), I immediately downloaded Book 2.

I've discovered that I actually don't care about the plot as much as I enjoy Ann Charles' ability to create engaging characters. Doc makes a great book boyfriend. Violet is surrounded by an amazing cast of secondary characters; her 10 year old twins, Aunt Zoe, and best of all, Will Harvey.

Charles' other talent is her ability to make the reader laugh out loud.

"One trip to the moon had apparently been enough for Doc, whereas I was all suited up and ready to rocket out of my boots again."

"But I’m telling you, you’re going to like this one.” “You said that the last two times.”
“Yeah, well, he has no visible rashes and isn’t trying to become a famous ventriloquist.”

“Is that as far as you’re going to bend?”
“On this subject, yes. But I’m willing to bend a lot more for other purposes.”

“Speaking of sexy, you look nice. That little blue number hugs you in all the right places.”
“Thanks.” I had all of the wrong places sucked in and battened down."

If you break out in hives at the thought of romance or steamy scenes, this book is not for you. If you need a laugh and a break, get downloading.
An exciting second in the Deadwood series! I am completely hooked and am on baited breath for the third book. This installment into Violet's life is even better then the first. As a single mom trying to make it in the real estate world, despite the machinations of a misogynistic co-worker, Violet works hard to ilk out a living and still be the best mom she can be. This can prove to be a challenge with a pair of twins who create a whirlwind of interesting adventures on their own. Her ability to attract trouble and ghosts works for and against her leaving me wanting more after each page!

Violet is a believable and real person. She does not have long flowing hair and legs up to her arm pits, she struggles with the baby weight she has had since the twins were born, is short, has unruly, wild hair and real financial issues. Even the most despicable characters in the novel are likeable simply because of the fact they are real, fleshed out individuals, be it her Aunt or the chicken. With each page they embroil themselves into your life, especially Elvis the chicken!!

If you have any doubts, just do a test read, I guarantee you will be hooked and reading them in no time!
This book is even better than the first. The twists and turns kept me guessing and held my interest throughout the book. The chemistry between Violet and Doc nearly melted my Kindle. You never know what is going to come out of Harvey's mouth and many times that had me snorting with laughter. Not to mention the things that Addy and Layne came up with.

I am writing this review after rereading the book as I didn't write one after the first time I read it and I will just say that this series is easily one of my absolute favorite series. I started rereading it after being in a book funk and it is just as good as the first time I read it.
Actually I like these books. But I do have a couple of issues. First the relationship between Violet and Doc. Enough! We really don't care and please move on, but this seems to be the main part of the story and it shouldn't be. My biggest problem though is Violet's male co-worker. He's obviously a criminal and he's a pig. If any one talked to me like he talks to her I would have recorded him, reported him to my boss and to the police (criminal activity) and get him fired and thrown in jail. This whole story line doesn't ring true. The fact that he gets away with his behavior because he brings money to the company is ridiculous. Violet is suppose to be this self-reliant, single mother but she puts up with his harassment all the time - I just don't get it - makes the character of Violet all wrong. I thought after the first story he would be gone and was quite disappointed to find him back in this second book.
This is the second book of this humorous series by Ann Charles. New characters are introduced here, but it is the character development of the originals that is most satisfying. Getting to know Violet, her kids Addie and Layne, and her Aunt Zoe and their interaction adds great depth to the current story. Doc, Harvey and Coop are also more developed. The bad guys in this one are suitably evil. Truthfully, this one is very close to a 5-star offering.
