I found the writing a pleasure to read and the stories wonderful. To bad he did not write more. As a member of the Cascadians and a avid climber of Mt Adams this book goes on my 'save to read again' shelf.
If you enjoy climbing, hiking, and first hand historical perspective you must find this book!
The book was incorrectly assembled during production. The front title and the content of the book did not match. What was inside was a completely different story than the title on the cover.
This is one of the great classics of American mountaineering literature. Rusk was a legend in his own time.
Claude Rusk was a remarkable person. His sense of exploration and quest for knowledge was amazing. His early exploring of Mt. Adams was true pioneering. He is my number one idol in the Pacific Northwest. I have visited several of the places that he pioneered, mainly at Mt. Adams and in the Glacier Peak area. It was thrilling to stand where he had almost 100 years earlier. I have also visited the monument with his ashes on the summit of The Castle.

His writing is excellent, both in style and content. If you love wild places, adventures and nature you will love this book. I am lucky to have both the original hardback and the paperback.
