by Vivian Stuart

'This meticulously recorder adventure novel is a worthy successor to the Captain Horatio Hornblower series, and make no bones about it.' - Publishers Weekly This is the fourth volume in the Hazard Series, preceded by THE VALIANT SAILORS, BRAVE CAPTAINS and HAZARD'S COMMAND. It is January 1855 and the sea war with Russia has nearly frozen to a halt under the impact of the Crimean winter. Phillip Horatio Hazard, newly in command of H.M.S. Huntress, a steam powered beauty of a sloop-of-war, is en route to Odessa under sealed orders. He only half-realises, however, the perils that lie ahead.

I'm amazed that V. A. Stuart is a woman. There is no reason at all why a woman couldn't write war-oriented historical fiction, but it is so rare that it is a pleasant surprise. I thought that this book was one of the most enjoyable and educational volumes in the series. Just prepare yourself- Stuart's novels rarely end with a smile! Especially when you get to the Sepoy Mutiny. A bit dire, but still the series is very much worth reading. It was a dire time...
Like all the Hazard books, the research is fantastic, the historical information interesting and convincing. The characters are generally well-drawn and the scenes are vivid. The plots are relatively simple and contain coincidences that require the reader's effort to suspend disbelief. A fun read, however.
excellent historical novel
In a deviation from the previous three volumes of this series, Hazard is involved in a secret mission in the Crimea (don't fret readers, this info is on the back cover and doesn't divulge content). As with the previous three, Stuart has continued to develop an interesting character in Hazard. They're all worth reading, and going through the out of print search process to obtain.
