As with Leon Uris' Trinity, I really loved this book. I read it about thirty five years ago. I thought it was so sad that when denied the love of his woman, a man's character turns dark and only hatred spews forth. The battle of a woman who loves her husband but is told by the local priest that enjoying her husband as she does, she is breaking God's laws and will face hell if she continues. The hatred runs from this couple down through their children. Life is beyond difficult. The potato famine is occuring - their lands that they've farmed for generations is taken from them by the English - love, hate, politics, sacrifices... Great read...
This is a follow on to the authors previous book Trinity, picking up the Larkin family & Ireland's saga through world war I & the rising. Wonderfully told, periodically repetitious, the story is riveting. I had been reading the paper version we had around the house fr years & bought the Kindle version to take on a 23 day trip through Europe. Thoroughly enjoyed the book every night on the deck of our cruise ship & finished the book on the flight home. Too much to see & do otherwise.
I read the Exodus and the Haj by Leon Uris.
I think this Author is brilliant. Not fast reading
because his books are filled with accurate historical
background and knowledge. This is like the
sequel to The Trinity. I look forward to reading
both these books because I am convinced that
it will give me in depth and comprehensive understanding
of the Irish Struggle. Just like Exodus gave me much
deeper understanding of Israel. And the Haj gave
me much better understanding of the Arabs in Palestine.
A great tale told well. Fantastic characters in interesting settings, set during a troubled time for my beloved Ireland. Just purchased 5 copies to send to my Irish cousins just in case they haven't read it yet. I could not put it down, and raced to my reading time each night. A bit long, but Mr. Uris keeps your interest on every page, and builds out each of the real life heroes of the famed Easter Rising of 1916. My uncle Tom was a provisional commander of the IRA, and thus the story gave me details about the time in history that I did not know. Highly recommended.
I have read and enjoyed all of the books Leon Uris has written. Redemption falls way short of his writing. First third of story just rehashes Trinity. The rest of the story is good, but I don't understand why I have seen reviews of this book and no one has brought up how all of a sudden the two Hubble boys are alive and well. As I recall in Trinity toward the end both were killed. Can anyone explain this to me, perhaps I missed an explantion?
lets go baby
If you loved Trinity, you will love this book. It is still great as a stand alone book if you have not read Trinity. The writer fills you in enough on the back story so that you get the picture. The account given of Gallipoli and the Anzac forces is absolutely unforgettable and informative.
Love the continuation of the story of Trinity. I enjoy Leon Uris as an author. I have not read a book he has written that I have been disappointed in..
i really like stories about Ireland and the Irish probably because I have a lot of Irish heritage but it is a fast paced story and one does not lose interest. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical novels which is what I would call this book. I have read quite a few of Leon Uris' books and have always liked his way of telling a story. Enjoy!!
