by William W. Johnstone

In the depth of a cruel High Lonesome winter comes a cryptic message for Smoke Jensen. The letter tells of skulduggery by gold barons, railroad magnates and Chinese tongs in San Francisco. Smoke knows only one person in the city by the bay: the well-rounded, open-natured Francie, mistress of one of the town's most notorious pleasure palaces. Smoke once rescued her from raiding Cheyenne, but now Madame Francie is mysteriously dead...and Smoke's arrival in San Francisco is less than welcoming. Then, on the waterfront, he learns of a plot by the wealthy, the mighty, and the deadly to expand their stronghold over the region's gold-rich lands. Beating a trail into the High Sierras, Smoke recruits a band of angry prospectors, ranchers and farmers for a final showdown that could be the end of Smoke Jensen...

I have read a great many of these books, but this book is just not believable. The main characters faced too many enemies. In this story the date of the last enemy is left unknown. I know a good story needs to leave you wanting more, but this story leaves you hanging. It furthermore, leaves you with the idea the man's wealth will allow him to succeed. I don't like stories where evil wins, or may win. I was disappointed in this book.

Great deal! There are two books. "Cunning of the Mountain Man" and "Power of the Mountain Man", only loosely connected, if at all. The former is set in a corrupt New Mexican town controlled by a rich, crooked Englishman who owns the law and judges. He's determined to hang Smoke, and we CAN'T have that without a fight. The latter story takes place in Old San Francisco, the wharf area and China Town. There are some VERY big "fat cats", crooked and greedy as imagineable that has it in for ANYBODY getting their way, including Smoke and his old friend. This is a very good ride in the Old City, especially if you're familiar with it now like I am.

Same old, same old. Sometimes there is just too much description and fluff and never ending fight sequences.

I am collecting William Johnstone's western books - specifically the series about Preacher, Smoke Jensen and Matt Jensen. I enjoy them all. The basic plots are similar, of course. Smoke (or Preacher or Matt) gets his man (or men) after gun battles (or fist fights or knife fights) in various places, sometimes with help, but each story is different enough I find them enjoyable and easy reading.

Always great reading when it's a Johnstone book. Power of the Mountain Man is another great story that keeps you going to the next page..

I love Wm Johnston's western books. They are my favorite and the ones I read the most of.
Mr. Johnstone besides Preacher your very best are the Jensen family. BUT we need the Jensen boys to finally learn the truth of who they are. Smoke will always be at the top of all the western books.
