The Edgar Cayce readings come alive in this fascinating novel on the Essenes and their preparation for the Messiah. The story revolves around three women whose lives were profoundly affected by the advent of Jesus, and includes the preparation of Mary, and the birth, education, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus.

Fictional, but historically well-researched. This is a wonderful read -- detailed and vibrant, true to the times, exacting in its delivery. The story is in 3 parts, each one dedicated to a woman whose life touched that of Jesus. The first (and longest) part gives a lovely and moving accounting of Judith, who was held in high esteem by the Essenes. The author weaves the story as she conveys a vivid background about how the Essenes lived, their culture, their beliefs, their purpose. Part two is a story about a sister of Jesus. Part three is about a woman who was at the Stable for Jesus' birth. Detailed. Fascinating. I've read this book several times, and will read it again.
Mary LaCroix writes about the life of Jesus in a way that really brings the man to life. Unlike any other bible history novel, I found she truly breathed life into Jesus, Mary, Joseph and so many other biblical characters. The depth of knowledge was inspiring. We all know the story of Jesus, LaCroix goes behind the scenes to bring us their lives.
This book is a wonderful and I would like to think a real look into the life of the Essenes and their connections to Jesus, his Mother Mary, and all of his friends.
We have given dozens of copies of the lovely book away over the years and it never fails to touch hearts. Mary Lacroix shares the lives of the Essenes in amazing detail: shining a bright light on the experiences of Jesus of Nazareth by describing the effect of his life on three women: his little sister; his teacher, Judith; and the daughter of the inn-keeper; the young woman who assisted at his birth, and who traveled to Egypt to help the young family when there was an edict to destroy all the male infants.
My favorite book of all time and I'm a long time reader!
Bought book because my sister has been trying to get me to read it for at least two years. She is right, great read.
Love it!
I love this story and reread it every few years. Mary LaCroix makes ancient times and characters come to life. I feel as though I am living through them. I like to reflect on this story. What a wonder it would be if we had a master sould come in our time. Our world is still filled with war and greed and in the US economic slavery. To me the congress and senate mirror the saducees and pharisees of Yeshua's times. Reading this story helps me to dig to deep into my own life and try to be a better person and to keep my thoughts centered on God and not the happenings in the world. This story cannot help but touch your soul.
