People have dug into the Appalachian hills for generations, looking for coal. Ann Brandt has mined the same region for gold. Her novel Crowfoot Ridge is the evocatively-told tale of a woman who has decided she must return to Crowfoot Ridge and reveal the truth about a hideous childhood incident. It is a secret she has kept all her life, but after a brush with death opens her eyes to the lie she has been living, she knows that only by returning to Crowfoot Ridge and revealing this secret can she set herself free of it. This book features powerful writing, a finely-tuned sense of place and character, and a storyline that keeps you turning the pages until the surprising and emotional finale.
Set in the NC mountains near Asheville, this story tugs at your heart strings and leaves you with a feeling of completion. Quick and predictable, a fun read.
In her first novel, I found Brandt's portrayal of characters to be very deep. The character's themselves are complex. . .the story is not. Living in NC, I figured out quickly that the names of the characters from North Carolina have Carolina names (they are all counties and towns) Avery=Avery Country; Mars=Mars Hill; Wayne=Waynesville; Shelby=Shelby. The "outsiders" from Flordia have "normal" names. After meeting Brandt, I can assure you that she is just as deep as her characters. She herself had a life-changing experience. I would encourage any of you who enjoyed CROWFOOT to go meet her if possible. The discussion of the novel was just as engaging.
Ann Brandt has written an outstanding novel. This story is packed full of emotion as it helps you remember fond memories from your own past- especially of your first love. The story makes you laugh, and it makes you cry. The characters are very well developed- enough to think of them as your friends. This was one of the few books that I have just picked up at the bookstore and after reading the flap, I was hooked- and I remained that way through the entire book. I hope we will not have to wait long before Ms. Brandt has another novel for us! Please treat yourself to a relaxing day in Crowfoot Ridge. This is one I will not soon forget.
I was so delighted to meet Ann Brandt in person at our local Barnes and Noble. At the time I found her personality delightful and her joy for writing contagious! As a writer myself, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with her and learn of the wonderful story behind her journey to publication and the miracle that made it a reality. I only wish I'd read the book before our talk. I would have loved to discuss this wonderful story with her!
Finally, finally I found the type of story I've been dying to read! There was no evil ex-husband, just a simple growing apart that happens to so many. There was a wonderful ecology lesson and an addressing of a real life problem in our world. I always enjoy being made aware of true life problems that should bother all of us! Not only that, but wrapped within this was a powerful love story and a powerful lesson in finding true love.
The writing was pure poetry and I read through it with lightning speed only to slow at the end simply because I didn't want to let these wonderful characters go. As a reader you will fall in love with Mars. The beauty of the setting as seen through Ms. Brandt's eyes will enchant you and allow you to wander through Avery's world with her.
This is truly a 5 STAR delight and a must read! Thanks Ann! I can hardly wait to read your next novel!

Dear Ms. Brandt,
Just tonight i have finally finished your wonderful novel entitled "Crowfoot Ridge". I can tell you now i have read many books, yours was very special to me. I live in South Carolina so it was a treat reading about the surrounding areas and being able to say to myself I've been there, or I've seen that place. I want to compliment you on your style of writing. You not only combined natural talent in creating a story but I found your words to be poetic at the same time. You combined two styles that I admire in writing, tall tale and poetry. Your words flowed together at times and created there own special paragraph poetry. It was lovely to read, I would recommend this book to anyone I come in contact with that shares a love of reading the way I do. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful talent. I will be looking foward to reading other works by you.
Sincerely A New Fan, Amy J. Brown
Avery Kessler's roadtrip to destiny takes the reader from the marshes of southern Florida to the kaleidoscope-colored Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Avery returns to Crowfoot Ridge and the memories and lies that have haunted her since childhood. She returns to the Marshall family: Sylva, her best friend; and Mars, her first love. But things have changed since Avery left Crowfoot Ridge, and digging up the past means confronting an uncertain future. Avery's journey is made more poignant and dramatic as the seasons change in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Ann Brandt's vivid writing paints bold, colorful scenery and come-to-life characters. Like Avery, after reading Crowfoot Ridge, I know I'll return to it again and again.
Ann Brandt is a refreshing new fiction writer. When I had completed Crowfoot Ridge, I felt as though I new each character intimately and could picture each and every scene on Crowfoot Ridge as if I had been there. Her characters are strong and believable. Ms. Brandt brings a new charm to the fiction world. I am anxiously awaiting her next novel.
