Interesting. Worth reading.
If you've read the earlier Conner Street's War this is pretty similar, set in the same plain streets of the East End at the same time.
The central character is not the daughter of an ironmonger, but lives on Ironmonger Street where the main employment is the factory across the road in Bermondsey.

We see Connie growing up from 1920 on and her friend Molly who was born with a disability and how their parents fare. Connie doesn't know who her father was and the search for his identity occupies her throughout the book as she makes good and bad decisions to gain her independence.

War comes and the streets are bombed night after night, close to the docks, stores and factories. There's a lot of ordinary little details such as a totter, which is a rag and scrap trader, trying to make a living and only getting a proper job when young men are scarce. There are fewer details that women knew, the difficulty of getting rationed items and no makeup or stockings, but more about craters in the road and buckled tram lines being removed.

This is a decent read, longer than the earlier book with more of a constant thread.
