Another Asher novel that is so British that the excessive 'darlings' alone may turn off Americans. In the states these character's ways of speaking would be considered pretentious at best. (As would the class consciousness.) It's distracting and makes it hard to take the dramatic twists and turns of the story seriously. I actually didn't know if I was looking at a typo or unfamiliar slang at several points. Crutch for crotch was surely a mistake but bodydoging? Haven't a clue. The plot would have been a chilling one if written with what seems like more forthrightness. I hate to think I'm being a Western bigot - I love to hear the English talk (and sing) but this issue seems worth mentioning.
This is a reprint from 1996 and it shows. I found the story old fashioned and dated. There are much, much better books to buy.
The longing by Jane Asher. All she wanted was a baby. Was that so much to ask? A baby to nourish in her body, to give birth with pain and pleasure, to adore. A baby to suckle and care for, to clean and cuddle and comfort. A baby to make her whole and complete. But her womb was empty and its emptiness filled her days and her nights, invaded her dreams, determined every waking thought. A baby. All she wanted was a baby… This was a good read with likeable characters. 4*.
