The allure of this cozy mystery is not in its plot, though it's a good one where all the elements dovetail nicely and all no loose threads are left hanging, but in the telling of the tale. The various chapters are written by participants from their own points of view, each giving a slightly different take on events or illuminating things that were previously murky. The book is dominated, by Harriet Bushrow, who acts as the detective, as she did in the author's prior two books, and who exerts an influence over all around her, whether they like it or not. It is, however, a gentle domination, as might be expected from a ninety-year-old Southern gentlewoman who knows her place in the world, even when that world is a protean one. All in all, a book with excellent narrative voices and characterization, as well as a serviceable plot and motivating mystery.

A venerable old woman was not prevented by the sleazy actions of some of the characters in this mystery tale of a small town club and family disharmony from successfully finding an explanation for the death of a second wife. Harriet Bushrow and company manage to uncover the exaggerations and other discrepancies of the victim's past to uncover the crime or lack of crime in this amusing work set in a small town in Tennessee.
