In this book, the author delves into archaeology as done on a small scale around British villages. A member of the local Archaeological Society has been up to something, and has paid the ultimate price for it. The mystery is just what this annoying fellow has been up to and who might have put a sudden stop to it. There are quirky characters and a body, as required in a mystery, and the clues do fit together in the end. The problem is, any other solution with any other killer would've done just as well.

This is my third Gladys Mitchell, and I don't think I'm going to be a huge fan, though I'll pick one up from time to time when I feel like going back to the Golden Age of mysteries. All the necessary elements are there, but I find her plots unsatisfying, her solutions unsurprising, and her detective's methods illogical. Mrs. Croc simply seems to make up her mind that X is the killer, and the book comes quietly to an end.

Of the three Mitchells that I've read so far, the best was The Rising of the Moon, and it seems to be a departure from her usual books, with a pair of young brothers as the dashing detectives. Maybe the author should have continued with them and dropped Mrs. Croc?

Always a good read.

Good plot, but seemed a bit slow...an "old fashioned" mystery.
