From Chapter one:
On a starlit August evening in 1934, Harmon Scofield celebrated his eighteenth birthday with his new girl friend, Eunice Hoffer, seventeen, in a dark, smoky cabaret off Wilshire Boulevard. They were served without questions because he dressed well, looked and acted older than his age, flashed a lot of money around, and spent it freely.
Eunice kept up with Harmon, drink for drink, and agreed at well before midnight that a drive to the beach in his brand-new Reo-his father's birthday present to him-was a fine idea. He bought a bottle of Old Crow to take along. He left nearly a hundred dollars in tips at the cabaret, gave the parking lot attendant a ten-dollar bill to fetch the shiny Reo, and grabbed Eunice as soon as they were inside the car. She giggled, and slapped his hands away, and announced that she was going to stay a decent girl all the way to the beach. They had known each other for more than a month. They had made love often, but not yet on a beach.
