First published in 1981, The Wells Of Hell just feels like an 80s horror novel. It has that sense of immediacy to it, where everything that happens is part of moving the plot forward, without long arcs of scene setting or character building to unnecessarily pad the page count. Soviet conspiracies are still the first to be blamed when things go weird, but the horror itself is subterranean, drawing on the supernatural rather than the psychological, and touching on both Satan and Cthulhu.

Yes, this is a Graham Masterton classic, given new life by the gang at Telos Publishing. It's decidedly dated at parts, and certainly lacks the storytelling polish of his more recent work, but it still stands the test of time as a true horror novel.

If there's one flaw in the book it's there is no real suspense. Everything is just a bit too obvious, and plot developments are telegraphed for the reader early on. The characters are generic old-school horror protagonists, which is fine because they're really just there to find, feed, and flee the horrors below. The monsters (and the transformations) themselves are deceptively simple, but what Masterton does with/in water here is where the true horror lies. The story itself does get bogged down in the middle, but it races towards a chilling conclusion once the gang goes underground.

Even if The Wells Of Hell isn't his best, with its awkward balance between grins and grimaces, it's still a Graham Masterton horror novel and worth the read.

One of my favorite books of all time! This book, like all of the great Graham Masterton books, is a wonderfully dark humor tale mixed with a complex and clever storyline that kept me up reading all night. The basic premise of this book involves a plumber who runs into well water that isn't quite...clean. He also has a sidekick cat named "Shelley" after the famous Percy. All in all, I cannot recommend this book enough! Funny, well written, scary, adventurous, this book (like all of Masterton's work) pulls one right out of reality and places one right in the middle of supernatural craziness. Love this man's writing! If you like this sort of theme, you cannot go wrong with his work, any of them (The Pariah, all of the Dream Warrior themed books, any Sissy Sawyer books). Good reading!

I thought I'd read every Graham Masterton book out there, "In the horror category." It turns out I was wrong. This wasn't one of his best, but it was pretty dang good! I loved the characters. They were funny, and heartwarming. The storyline kept me glued to the pages, and while I didn't think it was too scary, the fact is that I had nightmares two nights in a row. So, it must have had some impact on me! It was quick and easy reading, with no lags or boring bits. Yep, I'd recommend this story and author. Now if they'd just put his book Tengu into an e-book, then I'd be one happy camper!

Wow, I read this pretty quick. I will probably read this again. This was classic, in your face horror. This could be classified as lovecraftien horror which it kind of is. It's like a classic b horror movie. I highly recommend to all fans of modern horror!!!!!

This book was pretty good. I bought it on a whim, looking for some spooky reading. Not quite shocking enough for me, but the characters are well formed, and likable.

It was a fun, Chtulhuesque read. If you're a fan of Lovecraft you'll enjoy this modern tale of folklorish horror.
