by Penny Vincenzi

Vincenzi’s cast of vivid characters, urgent situations, and crisp, confident writing have made her irresistible to readers.

In The Dilemma, Vincenzi's first novel, all Francesca Channing has to do in order to keep her marriage alive, her children safe, her life intact, is to tell a lie. One simple, straightforward lie. But it isn't that simple or straightforward at all. Her husband is charismatic, powerful and rich―and he adores her. He's also manipulative and scheming, with a family as large and complex as his business―Francesca is his third wife, after all. But it was an emotional crisis of her own which finally put Francesca's dilemma into perspective, that made her wonder if she loved him enough to lie for him, that made her wonder how far she could go.

After getting drunk on the Lytton family saga, upon starting to read this book, it seemed to me that it was not written by Ms. Vincenci. However I think this speaks to her skill as an author, writing in such a different style. The book started slowly and I almost thought it would be a let down, very unlike a Penny Vincenci book, but when she found her rhythm, it really took off and was unputdownable. Plots within plots and very unpredictable. She has the talent of knowing just how much to reveal and when, to keep readers interested enough but not to isolate them because the plot was beyond them. She has the gift of language: some phrases/sentences were so poignant/beautiful that you had to read them over and over to savour them. A note: I have never read a book with so many printing errors: very poor editing.
This book has such an interesting story. I love the way Ms Vincenzi weaves a story of so many characters. And she somehow gets me worrying about every one of them. And, as usual, I'm sad that it is over. A great read!!
I've loved just about all of PV's books. So when I say this is a disappointment I am not being overly critical. Its just wordy and it takes pages to get somewhere. I am only 1/4 of the way through and I am not one not to finish a book as I find that disrespectful to the author............but, I have to put this down for awhile and maybe get back to it later on. I hate Bard and Francesca and so far the only character I like is Francesca's mother and mother-in-law. As for his "beautiful" daughter she's just a waste of paper. Maybe I will be more sympathetic in a few years when I get back to it.
A good story although you are asked to believe that Frances is content to be told nothing, and Bard comes and goes when he pleases. A bit incompatible but Frances is a bit naive.
Penny Vincenzi writes about the lives of the rich British aristocracy. Like the title of this novel, she exposes the dilemmas that happen. Ms. Vincenzi has a way of writing that makes you feel that you know the characters personally and you actually want to find out what will happen next. Readers might find it difficult to put her books down. They describe the soap opera lives of the rich and famous.
Love this author. Great long storylines. Buy all of her books
I love her books...
The person who asked me to get the book loved it. She liked the extensive detailing throughout the saga.
