Ethie Coulter was born after her father Howard returned from the war in 1945. When his wife dies in bizarre circumstances, Howard must take on the burden of looking after eleven-year-old Ethie and her two older brothers. Howard was one of hundreds of Canadian soldiers sent to the Far East following the attack on Pearl Harbour. Surviving the fierce battle for Hong Kong, he became a POW. Yet Howard carries more than the physical and mental scars inflicted by his captors. Something happened in Hong Kong, a secret that he has carried for nearly two decades. Ethie, inquisitive and fearless, will be the one to work her way towards the truth and help her father come to terms with the past.

Found this book as a recomendation on Amazon because I had red " After River" a while ago. I like books set in the 60ies and those that are written from a childs point of view. This one has both. I found the story quite compelling and also learned about some historic details that were new to me ( have to admit I did not know that Canadian troops had been stationed in Hongkong during WWII). Looking forward to Mrs. Milners next book !

There is something endearing about Milner's story telling. After River was sensitive and deep. Once I read that I found her next book, Promise of Rain. It is a completely different theme, but stands next to other recent recollections of the Japanese treatment of POW'S during WWII. She brought together that experience with the soldier's personal life and created a somewhat suspenseful and poignant tale of pain, loss, and a rich, believable but bitter-sweet ending. Hope she writes more.

Book condition was just as described and arrived quickly! I enjoyed reading the great story, as well. THANKS so much!

Donna Milner is an exceptional discovery for me this summer and a very good read. Beautiful woven story of siblings love, one of them a Trisomy 21 child, their mother's sudden death and the traumatized, alcoholic father.

I've just finished this and was so very disappointed. I adored Donna Milner's first novel After River and was expecting even better things from this one, but it just failed to deliver. A very(!!!) predictable plot was its major failing. I did enjoy the first person voice of Ethie - maybe because she reminded me so much of the narrating character in After River - but the third person sections about her father Howard often felt like a history lesson, like the author was regurgitating facts she had read on WWII; it felt forced and contrived. Not one I would recommend sadly.
