Voltaire’s career was vast and polemical, across philosophy, history, tragedy, comedy, journalism, and letters, but his public reputation centres around the tiny novella Candide, or Optimism. To understand Candide, we must understand the author: although a champion of the Enlightenment and a dogged advocate for freedom of speech, the Frenchman could not really be called a man of the people. As we see in Candide repeatedly, he despised religious fantatics, as well as those who would blindly admire a leader no matter their flaws.

Candide is absolutely worth the read. It is one of the landmarks of Western literature . Candide is absolutely worth the read. Everyone knows and talks about Voltaire, but not many actually bother to read his works (they would find that many of his personal views are not quite what we tend to say they are). This novella is short, witty, and reflective, and has a very fast-paced storyline. It should take the dedicated reader perhaps three or four hours to finish.
