What Can I say about knitting patterns from the mid-80's....Beautiful and Comfortable. Stylish. Clothing with a purpose and character. Nothing like the cookie cutter styles of today. So, when I found this 'County Diary Book of Knitting', I had to have it in my library. The patterns are amazing. Would they look out of place today? Since there is no real 'style standard' anymore, I don't think so. In fact, when I have made vintage patterns, I usually have people begging for the pattern or for me to make them one. People are tired of arms that are cut sizes too small or the fact nothing seems to fall past your hips or that every single clothing pattern anymore seems to hug the body, even if you don't have a body that is particularly comfortable being hugged. Big, Chucky, and Stylish, yes, the mantra of the 80's and it's still good today!
One of my favorite memories from my childhood is sneaking away my mother's copy of 'The Country Diary Book of Knitting' for an hour or two and making one of the lovely patterned sweaters for toys. My teddy bears and stuffed rabbits were the best dressed in the neighborhood. When my baby cousin was adopted, I spent weeks knitting her the perfect doll from the toy section of the book. The rest of the book held little interest to me, but that toy section was pure gold.

A year ago, I was looking for the perfect sweater pattern and I suddenly remembered my mother spending nights in front of the fire knitting beautiful things from the patterns in that book. I quickly found a copy on amazon and ordered it. I can honestly say that I was not disappointed. While the his and hers sweaters are a bit cheesy, individually, each pattern in this book produces gorgeous sweaters, the likes of which are seldom seen these days. The patterns in this book are perfect for a family, there are sweaters, scarves, and mittens for men, women, and little ones.

Now that I'm getting married and I need gifts for my littler attendants, I'm turning back to that beloved toy section and making hand-knit stuffed animals. As I get older, I look forward to introducing my own sons and daughters to the joy of knitting just as I was, with this beautifully illustrated book, full of patterns which will never get old.
If you love simply browsing through knitting books, dreaming about future projects and cozy sits with yarn and needles, this classic book is for you. The pictures and additional artwork are romantic. The patterns are original. The Country Diary Book of Knitting is an essential addition to the knitter's book stash.
This is a book filled with beautiful sweater knitting patterns for children and adults. Very classic designs and some rather Victorian, but all very beautiful. The patterns are not for beginners, but an intermediate knitter will enjoy these patterns.
Lost Python
Wonderful patterns. Goes with the original COUNTRY DIARY OF AN EDWARDIAN LADY.
I gave it to good will!
