This book is a very revealing, albiet complex treatise as to what happened to the former capital of empire when it's emperor abandoned it. My main interest in the subject was what specifically happened to Rome's public and private monuments after the transfer of government to the competing seats of power, but as there are few manuscripts dealing in any detail of this, I feel that Llewelyn satisfied my curiosity about as much as can be expected.
An enjoyable easy to read early middle ages history of the city of Rome. The Author modestly describes it as not academic but it has a small bibliography and adequate notes for most readers. I found it a nice addition to my knowledge of the city with three good maps. I do wish it would have added one more on all of Italy because it does cover additional areas out side the city.
