by Richard E. Eller

Founded by Thomas H. Davis in 1948, Piedmont Airlines was one of the most respected regional airlines of its time. This exhaustive history follows the airline from its humble beginnings at Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem, NC, to its 1989 absorption into USAir after a buyout at the highest price ever commanded by a regional airline. Drawing upon corporate documents, local news stories, and countless personal interviews with former Piedmont employees, the author tells the airline's history in detail. Included are 91 photographs that show the airline's development, and two appendices provide comprehensive lists of its fleet and service destinations.

If you are a Piedmont Airlines fan, you will truly enjoy this book. It is an EXTENSIVE recollection of the airline and truly captures the "spirit" and dedication of Piedmont's employees.

It is written as more of a textbook and historical account. While the other book about Piedmont (Flight of The Pacemaker) is certainly beautiful and a great tribute, this one is far more of a "study" of the airline itself. Don't expect the "coffee table" style of the last book. Again, this is more like a book you would receive in college. There is nothing wrong with either style. I love them both. This one is just different.

There are a lot of stories and it is full of history. One thing I admired is how the author did NOT avoid the dark times in Piedmont's history. He recounts the crashes and mishaps but weaves them into the story as vital incidents that shaped the airline and actually made it even more successful. He accurately captures one of the things that defined Piedmont: Yes there were mistakes, but they learned from them and made the airline better.

Any Piedmont fan will certainly want this book in their collection. I commend the author for his extensive research and accurate description of the greatest airline... ever.
Very through history of a great airline. Piedmont arguably became the country's finest airline, ever, before being bought out by USAir. This book chronicles its rich history from its humble beginnings as Camel City Flying Service until its final flight. What made Piedmont what it was the vision of founder T.H. Davis and his incredible employees who ferverntly believed in that vision and "their" airline. This book captures that vision and that spirit.
