Many recovery books are for the beginner, and that makes sense. But then what? This grace-filled book is for people at later stages in their recovery who are looking to uncover the underlying causes for their addiction and heal the psychological and spiritual pain, often lingering from childhood that many addicts bear. Grace Lost and Found is an inspirational and deep exploration of problems and pain; providing a compassionate approach to healing addictions, compulsions and other unhealthy habits. The 40 essays, each with their own set of practices and affirmations, engage readers on a journey through body, mind and spirit, symbolic symptoms, pain messages, levels of consciousness, and an expanded view of identity and life. The essays reach right to the bottom of the addict's bag of tricks--lack of accountability, the tendency to externalize blame, willfulness, defending and pretending, immaturity, denial--and offer wise, compassionate, and get-real spiritual counsel. As Cook reminds us, we tend to grow most from pain and crisis: "I help people find the ultimate treasure in their problems, the messages in their pain and the metaphors in their symptoms. We are all being guided to a higher, healthier path, when we pay attention."

I work in a library where I snatched this book off the new books display two summers ago. I have since bought a copy for myself, numerous copies for friends, and I regularly display it in the staff picks section. I am now re-reading it for the third time, and its hard to know where to start my praise: the writing is extremely frank, yet gentle, and shockingly sparse for the subject matter. I was immediately drawn to the short, saturated sentences, and I like the style, reminiscent of the way Hansel & Gretel left crumbs to find their way home through the forest when they wandered far. I found each short sentence so compelling I could not stop reading, could not stop anticipating the next sentence, could not stop my eyes from finding where the bits of bread would lead me. The content is lofty; the depth reflective of the challenges faced by humanity in the modern age. I especially like the short, succinct sections, which are followed by personal growth questions and an affirmation. The book feels both manageable, and, as one reads along, astounding. I cannot recommend it highly enough as one of the best books I have ever read. Life-changing.
Some of the same stuff that is covered in AA and 12 step aproved literature it is all about recovery and letting go the best books are stories written by those who lived it !
This is truly the best book I have read on recovery and spirituality. I deeply connected with this book and will read it again. It will be a permanent book in my library. I do not know this author but she is certainly gifted. Thank you for writing such an awesome book.
Looking forward to reading and sharing this book.
Excellent book!
When i came across this book several months ago i had no idea the impact it would have on my life. As a recovered alcoholic i was drawn to the author and this book. After starting a book study to dive deeper into my childhood, i soon realized that i had wounds that hadnt fully healed. Week after week our group would meet looking for solutions to our childhood answers in grown mens bodies. This book has transformed my behavior and feelings to a new level of peace and serenity. If you are interested in learning more about your purpose and meaning of yourself then this book is for you. Would have given it 6 stars but amazon doesnt rate that high. Mary Cook has a wonderful spirit that has enriched my life for the better and helped many others in and out of recovery.
