by Paul O. Williams

More than one thousand years in the future, the conservative borders of Pelbar society continue to crumble as the people of Pelbar conduct trade, form friendships, and intermarry with members of the tribes now settled peacefully around the citadel of Northwall. Not all agree with the changes, however, and long instead for the old times of conflict and rigid order. Igniting the tension is the discovery of a mysterious subterranean shelter, where the descendants of survivors of the long-ago nuclear war live. A young woman from the shelter and the shocking revelations she brings precipitate a crisis that will profoundly affect the futures of plainsmen and citadelfolk alike. The Dome in the Forest is the third volume and one of the most exciting tales in the Pelbar Cycle, a classic series of seven postapocalyptic novels about the people of Pelbar.

Back in the early 1980's, I stumbled upon this in paperback form at a local bookstore. Fascinated by the premise, I bought it immediately. It entertained me a lot, so realizing that I'd missed the first two books, I went back to the bookstore and purchased all in the series that were available. Too many moves later, I've rediscovered this series in Kindle format, and have bought the first three in the series with Amazon points. This is a fun book and I have wondered if Hugh Howey read this at some point in his life, as his Wool series has a similar premise. I enjoyed rereading, and had a quiet chuckle at some of the outdated ideas of what passed for high tech back 30+ years ago.

I will NOT be buying the remaining four in the series. Williams's heirs are "killing the goose that laid the golden eggs" with their rapacious pricing. When I bought this e-book, it was priced at $9.99 and I thought that was bad. After all, the books hadn't been THAT successful, and they are NOT timeless sci-fi greats, though worthy and entertaining efforts. Now the price for the e-book is $15.15. I would say this novel is worth about $8.99 in kindle format, and it's a shame that a new generation of potential readers will be put off by the price. I suggest that the publisher seriously consider marketing to the public e-libraries as well as enrolling the books in Kindle Unlimited. Otherwise, these books may attract us oldsters who read them once and would enjoy reading them again, but not any new readers who recognize and can figure a reasonable price for an electronic book. People considering: look in used bookstores first, or buy them used from Amazon sellers for a lot cheaper. I see you can get a copy of this for $.01 plus shipping - much more in keeping with the real value of the book.
Freaky Hook
I'll write this review once, for this book in the series. I read these books years ago in high school and always kept an eye out for a re-issue since I had given my originals away a long, long time ago. The quality of the reprint is very good, and I like the more understated cover art.

I love this series and always have, but this is my favorite book out of them all.

I hope that I can talk my daughter in to trying them when she's not overwhelmed with freshman high school work! Finding good SciFi/Fantasy is difficult for her, and I suppose for girls in general. This series with its matriarchal society might prove enticing or, at the least, less off putting.

I recommend this for EVERYONE to read.
This is the 'cheating' book of the series. All others are about individual tribes coming back together in an alternate future. This one, brings back 'some' future technology from a group of people descendant from us who made it to a fallout shelter so remember our history. It does have all our favorite characters and is written to move, but spent way to much time inside the dome introducing new characters who could have done without.
I have loved reading these books from when I was a kid. I cannot go a few years without reading the entire series again.
The shipping was on time and came in excellent condition. This book is absolutely fantastic. It was the first of the series i read and made be buy all 7 of them at the same time. I am reading it again after reading one and two first and it makes a lot more sense. This series is breathtaking and more people should read it. All ages would be entangled in its amazing stories.
I "The Dome in the Forest" years ago but missed some of the other volumes in the Pelbar Cycle. Re-reading this story just confirms that the series is one of those hidden gems of the genre.
Great series
As a whole series is good. Makes you think. Gets a little preachy at times. But overall worth it. Thumbs up
