Howard-who I knew created Conan-was of course always there .
Howard-who I knew created Conan-was of course always there, but inevitably his name was accompanied by L. Sprague de Camp or Lin Carter, or both. I've always distrusted collaborations and posthumous continuations, and I could never tell from the Lancer/Ace presentations which was which.

About Robert E. Howard: Robert Ervin Howard was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror. Mark Schultz - Robert E. Howard's Complete Conan of Cimmeria Preliminary Slipcase Illustration (Wandering Star, 2002). One of the great craftsmen of the modern age, Mark Schultz specializes in fantasy and heroic subject matter, such as this sublime pencil illustration. I totally love Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, great artwork by Mark Schultz and a rockin' good pulpy yarn from his typewriter to boot Temple of Saurus. Howard was born in Peaster, Texas on January 22, 1906. He created the character of Conan the Barbarian in the pages of Weird Tales. At the beginning of his writing career, he primarily wrote pulp fiction and had numerous stories published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales including Spear and Fang, The Hyena, Wolfshead, Red Shadows, and The Shadow Kingdom. By 1936, almost all of his fiction writing was in the western genre and his first novel, A Gent from Bear Creek, was about to be published. He committed suicide on June 11, 1936 at the age of 30. Ballantine books, new york. Howard’s Conan has not been so easy to illustrate as I imagined he would be. I think this is in part because, while Conan and his Hyborian Age are nominally works of epic heroism, featuring hosts of brave warriors, fields of savage battle, and deeds of strength and bravery and derring-do as is the tradition of heroic fantasy, what makes them great is a deeper, darker context. When the December 1932 issue of Weird Tales appeared on newsstands, Robert E. Howard (1906-1936) probably didn’t imagine that he was making history.
