Excellent story. Spock fans will love it. Scotty is portrayed almost as a minor character who puts his trust in a creepy stranger who hopes to prosecute McCoy and Spock... It really is a hard blow to a Trek fan, and especially sad since this is a fantastic tale for the most part. This was written years before the sequel shows to TOS, and the threat of the singularity and the time-travel dilemma of the (sometimes) mad scientist who had taught the younger Spock are reminiscent of the rich ideas later explored on TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. Make what you will of Flynn and Hunter, and also Neon, Snarl and Jenniver, strong but very idealized woman-warrior characters. This novel almost makes Discovery seem like an all-male Trek (if you bother to consider it Star Trek)! Bottom line--Spock and McCoy will keep you turning the pages!
McIntyre has either been away from Classic Trek too long or I have. It's great to see these characters acting and talking like themselves again. Spock hogs the spotlight again, but there are so MANY new supporting characters that I won't complain - but will want to see a lot more of them.

Best Vonda Trek since she fixed all the loopholes in Trek III: the Search for Leonard Nimoy's Career in her novelization.

Trek or otherwise, McIntyre never disappoints.
This book has been around a long time and I recently read it again. Some things about it bother me, the author is not always spot-on with characterizations, Federation technology still contains bullets, and why do the Enterprise's doors suddenly have knobs to open them??? And yet, this book was worth reading again. The author makes it exciting and it holds one's interest very well. I mean, any Star Trek story that contains the death of Kirk and the reactions of Spock and McCoy to that death is intriguing to say the least. And I won't give anything else away! Read it!
The Apotheoses of Lacspor
Any true Trekkie (and I mean Kirk, Spock, McCoy trekkie) will love this book. It's like watching another episode, only we can read about each character's emotions. A very nice touch!
Faintly remembered reading it as a teen and liking it. The story is interesting enough but the characters aren’t quite in character a good chunk of the time, which is very distracting.
After more than 35 years, this is still one of the best -- if not simply the best -- Star Trek novels ever published. McIntyre did brilliant work here. I love this book!
This was a suspensful and exciting story from beginning to end! I especially liked that it featured the character of Spock.
solid star trek original adventure, introguing alternate crew members we have never met before, of course anything tome travel is always a good adventre
