This series was a surprise to me. I must have missed it when it came out. A fairly realistic fantasy world with non-heroic heroes (except for the fabulous combat skills). Dhulyn and Parno are wandering mercenaries of a semi-religious mercenary order. While fighting wars for money is fine, and the best death is dying at the hands of a fellow mercenary, they have a rigorous code and are considered almost like judges by civilians. Characters were generally well drawn with even the villains being relatively sympathetic. A bit too much "noble savage" stuff but not too much to mind. In this episode, they are in the midst of clarifying the succession of a failing state and restoring it to proper religious practice while also stopping a horrifying crazy serial killer who has been drawn in to help an even worse pretender to the throne, when while in the middle of a side trip to another world, the book just stops. STOPS. I've learned that this sort of thing happens when something happens in the writers real life or there has been some kind of contract dispute with the publisher, but it does make for a very odd and not very satisfying ending to an interesting little series.
I loved all of the Dhulyn and Parno novels. They have such a wonderful relationship, and they get into such interesting trouble. In this book, they find themselves lost in a maze that spans worlds, have to figure out who is a killer, and help save a kingdom. All in a day's work for mercenaries, right?
Just finished re-reading my Kindle version of this book, and I have to say, I was impressed all over again with this series. I am very disappointed in her publishers who are saying sales aren't sufficient to keep this series going.

The two main characters Dhulyn Wolfshead and Parno Lionsmane are possibly the best pair of heroes the Fantasy genre has seen in ages, especially regarding Duhlyn... Ah, I mean Wolfshead. She is at once one of the most bada$$ female leads I've read ever, she also manages to be complex and consistent and always engaging. Parno is the perfect foil and complement. The partnership and banter between the two is what really makes this series worth reading. READ IT. And actually buy it, don't just download it illegally, because these two characters deserve to have their story finished.
I like this author. Has interesting characters and story.

Good charters and plot I enjoy Violette plots. Typical easy read and follow on to previous books. Look forward to more of their adventures
Great read. If you like the other novels of Dhulyn and Parno this adventure will also transport you into their world for another great adventure. It is once again well written and delightfully entertaining. I am looking forward to reading another of these engaging characters adventures.
It has been 3 years and 5 months since the last Dhulyn and Parno novel, and it is unacceptable that a new one has not been published yet!! I know Violette Malan would love to print more, but her publisher, DAW, has refused. I am boycotting DAW until we have more Dhulyn and Parno!!!!!! This author writes good and clean stories, in a world of rubbish, and we need to support her!
I have all her books now.
