WHY won't he stay in his seat?WHY does she flap her hands? And WHAT should I do?As inclusion becomes the norm in general education, teachers are faced with behaviors they have never seen before. Special needs educators may recognize the telltale symptom of a sensory need or a textbook case of an avoidance behavior, but this is all new territory for the General-Ed crowd!Written by Director of Special Education Peter Gennaro, occupational therapist Beth Aune, and special needs mom and advocate Beth Burt, this book illuminates possible causes of those mysterious behaviors, and more importantly, provides solutions! Teachers can quickly look up an in-the-moment solution and learn about what the child is communicating, and why.The authors collaboratively address problem behaviors such as: out-of-seat behaviors, fidgeting, hand-flapping, covering ears, hiding or running away when upset, putting head down or "shutting down", difficulty with class work and homework, losing materials and missing assignments, poor handwriting, not following directions, saying rude or inappropriate things, clothing issues, difficulty making decisions, excessive talking, laughing excessively or being silly, little or no eye contact, temper outbursts, and many others!Teachers, it is possible to accommodate learning differences and sustain a positive learning environment for ALL students. This book is a must-have for every inclusive classroom!

Very nice, helpful idea. Some of the recommendations included in this book do not work for my son's situation and can be considered counter productive. I realize it's impossible to write one set of recommendations when autistic kids vary widely on the spectrum. Just be careful to read the content before giving to a teacher for use.
Water
Can use as evidence of accommodations on IEP's etc.
Jogas
This was a God send preparing for our IEP. I went in with great ideas for our team and information to back it.
Heri
This book only addressed some of the simplest behaviors that might occur in the young classroom. I needed solutions for behaviors that most often occur in secondary classrooms. This book might be helpful to new teachers, but otherwise is not a good resource.
Xinetan
Book provides little of no insight that is not generally known by many (most) educators.
Goktilar
The book described many quick solutions for challenging behaviour. The solutions could probably be applied to every child, not just in the classroom
Nikobar
This is a great book to have on your person as you deal with students on a daily basis. I have used it several times.
This book is a great reference for any classroom! It takes a cut to the chase approach to solving behavior issues, and is in particular a great resource when dealing with children with an autism spectrum disorder.

The approach is this: see a child exhibiting a behavior issue? Turn to the table of contents, look up the behavior, flip to the pages listed, and find solutions that can be implemented quickly and easily. There are a lot of books out there that are great for more in-depth explanations of the reasons behind behaviors, but this is a great on-the-spot guidebook for teachers, paraeducators, and even parents. I've already given my copy away, and plan to purchase another for myself and every one of my son's teachers.

Handy tip: the book comes in a conventionally bound format. To make it even more useful for classrooms, take your copy to Staples or any other copy/print center, and have them cut the binding and replace it with a spiral binding instead. For a dollar or two, it's a great upgrade, and helps the book to lay flat, which is great for any reference book.
