This is my favorite food allergy cook book. It gave me ideas of what to feed my toddler child who was newly diagnosed. 7 1/2 years later, it is still the only one I consistently use out of the 15 - 20 I have bought. I use the egg replacer from this cookbook as a substitute in my other recipes. Now that we are gluten free too, I just use these recipes and substitute a gluten free flour and the recipes still work. That is not something I can say for most other cookbooks I have tried.

I know that some people will say, "well this is just a cookbook of recipes that avoid milk and nut ingredients." EXACTLY. If you are looking for a "cheesecake substitute" recipe that is like cheesecake, only dairy free, this cookbook is not for you. I have found that there are two schools of thought with food allergy cooking. The first is to try and duplicate exactly what you were eating before, only in a "safe" way. For example, you might try to make a dairy free, gluten free, egg free pizza that looked and tasted just like the "real" thing. For us, we have found that this is not a realistic way to approach our food allergy diet. You are going to be disappointed and the foods that you try to replace them with are probably not that healthy for you. This cookbook takes the approach our family has chosen to take, find different recipes/foods that you enjoy that don't try to be what they are not. A chicken recipe is good and doesn't require dairy. So we are happy with that and enjoy it for what it is. This is probably more successful for those families who decide everyone will eat the same way. With 3 out of the 4 of us in the family having the same food restrictions, that was an easy decision for us to make.

In summary, this is a great cookbook and was a lifesaver for us. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
My son (a 1 year old) was diagnosed with food allergies (Egg, Nut, Milk, Fish, ShellFish, Tree-Nut). This cookbook was then only one that I could find that addressed the harder of the three to avoid (milk, nut, and egg). With the help of this cookbook I can now prepare for my son most of his favorite foods! The pancake recipe was a indeed a lifesaver...I could not figure out how to prepare this much loved favorite without the egg and milk...this cookbook solved the problem and he LOVES them! The recipes are realistic and easy to follow. Highest Recommendations!
Our two boys have been diagnosed with food-induced eczema. This would be a breeze if they would just both be allergic to the same foods. But, alas, we have a varied array of non-overlapping allergies. The main culprits are eggs, nuts, and dairy. What a blessing to this mother to find the book What's to Eat? - The Milk-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook.

The day I received the book in the mail I sat down and read the cookbook, cover to cover. Desperate to find a solution to dinner (and other meals), I was pleasantly amazed to read over 100 recipes for salads, soups, main dishes, breads, side dishes, and desserts. In addition, there are some suggested menus for special occasions.

Finally, I can plan a menu we can all enjoy without planning two or three meals per meal time. The ingredients are not obscure, and either in my kitchen already or I have seen them in my supermarket on a regular basis. For the next four days, I have set up a menu from the recipes in the book and have made a list of seven ingredients that I do not already have in my pantry, mostly herbs.

I am looking forward to testing these recipes and finding a freedom in our meal plans that does not include stops at the local fast food restaurant. In our home we can begin to eat our way - every day!

This is one of my current favorite cookbooks (and I have quite a few!). The pancake recipe is by far the best I have made that accomodates my kids' allergies (when we substitute rice milk for the soy milk in the recipe) - they come out with a nice fluffy texture instead of the gummy mess I got when using other recipes with my regular substitutes. And several other recipes have made it into our regular rotation - sweet & sour turkey meatloaf, easy winter potatoes, fruited carrot salad, and probably more that I'm not remembering now.

It was great to find a cookbook that accomodated most of the major allergens for my kids - there are a few recipes we can't use because of soy ingredients, but those are very few, and the rest more than make up for that.

I recommend this book to everyone I know who has a similar allergen list.
The author warns this book is not a place to find "replacement" foods, but rather a book of recipes that "just happen to be" allergen-free. Her chapters include:
-Soups & Salads
-Quick Breads & Breakfast Foods
-Other Desserts

While I assert that we sometimes WANT replacement foods, my biggest complaint is that it doesn't have enough where these allergies cause trouble. Egg, nut and dairy allergies cause difficulties with breakfast, dessert and baked foods. Those are the areas where this cookbook treads lightly. It offers some wonderful cookie recipes! The cake recipes, however, taste too "healthy" for my family. :) Other than that, we've not tried anything because we haven't needed to. I know how to cook vegetables and main dishes without dairy, eggs or nuts. I don't need a special cookbook for those.

Also, the recipes don't allow for "growing out" of allergies. We've just discovered that my son, while he still has his dairy allergy, may no longer be allergic to eggs. It's much easier to just pop in some eggs than to make the oil/water/baking soda mixture necessary to use these recipes. It would be nice if the author allowed for substitutions if not all the allergies exist.

Overall, I'd say it's a good book, but I prefer The Egg, Dairy and Nut Free Cookbook.
