I love this book! I originally discovered "When the Woods Hum" when I was teaching early elementary aged children. It explains the 17-year Cicada phoenomena at a level kids can understand. With this being the active year in this extraordinary cycle, I wanted to get this book for my grand-nieces (ages 5 and 3) who live in NC. I was dismayed to find it is out-of-print, but quite pleased with discovering a lightly used copy to send to them.
I study cicadas and I can say that this is the best children's book about periodical/17 year cicadas. The illustrations and facts are accurate. If you want your child to learn about periodical cicadas in a fun and engaging way, this book is the best.
When Jenny was little, and her father first told her about the woods humming she didn't really understand, but after he explaned, and gave her the cicada that he had kept for 17 years, she understood a little more. I think this is a very good book, and it shows how families follow a tradition.
I also liked this book, because it taught me something that I never knew before, and I think that it is a really cool thing. I would recommend this book for children ages 3-8. This was a wondeful book, and I hope that many people can enjoy it.
