With its huge, rounded body and long tusks, a walrus can be easily identified. This mammal lives in the Arctic Ocean and feeds on shellfish from the seabed. Both male and female walruses have tusks (long teeth), although the tusks are longer and thicker on males. Walruses also have thick skin and lots of blubber (fatty tissue), which protect them from the stabbing tusks of other walruses. There is just one species of walrus, and its closest relatives are fur seals.
In this fascinating and engaging book, students will learn the distinguishing characteristics of seals, sea lions, and walruses. They will also read about the habitats, food sources, and threats to this appealing group of animals called pinnipeds.
Both seals and sea lions, together with the walrus, are pinnipeds, which means "fin footed" in Latin. But seals' furry, generally stubby front feet - thinly webbed flippers, actually, with a claw on each small toe - seem petite in comparison to the mostly skin-covered, elongated fore flippers that sea lions possess. Secondly, sea lions have small flaps for outer ears. The "earless" or "true" seals lack external ears altogether.
An engaging introduction to the world of seals, sea lions, and walruses presents information concerning their anatomy. Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required. To get the free app, enter your mobile phone number.
All pinnipeds have four flippers one pair in front (foreflippers) and one pair in back (hind flippers), a thick layer of blubber, and sensitive whiskers called vibrissae. Pinnipeds are divided into three families the walruses, the true seals, and the eared seals.
