This is refreshingly honest and is the first nursing memoir I've read that hasn't glossed over the unpleasant details. The author even admits that she bullied younger nurses when she was in training, and that nursing was not her choice of career. This isn't a rosy picture of a bygone era, it's an honest one. There's no whining or complaining either; she simply tells it like it was. It's also balanced, with humorous stories as well.
This book is about a nurses training during the 1930;s in the UK. When I was in hospital (1974) as a child, I remember the student nurses on the ward as kind and hard working. The Sister on the ward was a real dragon and made those girls lives miserable, thus the story of Ms. Prentis training is quite accurate.
This book is a wonderful read for a former nurse and it came well-packaged. I am very happy to own it and I will read it again in the future. It's a keyhole view of an important era. I'm glad my training was more comfortable than the conditions these nurses lived through. They were heroines.
Ms Prentis' memoirs on nurse's training in the 1930's before the wide spread use of antibiotics and the women's revolution. As a retired RN I was very entertained by the scenes depicted. Thank goodness nursing has evolved from being the physician's handmaiden.
Anyone interested in the nursing profession as it used to be will be highly entertained and enlightened.
I thought this book was delightful. Reading the true account of how nurses in the UK became nurses was unbelievable. I think it was a little different then the USA, but I really don't know. I will have to look into that. It was probably just as harsh in the USA. This book was one of my best reads in the last year. I encourage you to read it!!!
Excellent writing as I was in England during part of the time of her stories. Unfortunately I was so enthusiastic to get her whole series that I order both A Nurse in Time and A Nurse in Action plus the combined titles. I have endeavoured to cancel the latter with no success because I cannot find how to on line. I would like to have the whole series to keep forever as they are so good but need a refune!!!!
London after the war was not a good place to be, but tens of thousands of people had nowhere else to go. The district nurses of the East End saved and brightened the lives of many dirt - poor people. Very well written.
I loved this book it brought back lots of memories, I trained as a nurse in England in the 1970s and lots of the aspects in the book were still evident! It is a funny true story. I would highly recommend it.
