Young Benjamin Franklin could do almost anything. At the age of 12, he worked at a print shop. By 15, he had started writing in his brotherâ?s newspaper. His funny writing and clever advice became famous all over the colonies. Ben invented the lightning rod, a new kind of stove, and many other things that improved peopleâ?s lives. When the colonies rebelled against England, Ben helped write the Declaration of Independence and the new Constitution. One of the most respected men of his time, Benjamin Franklin remains a role model for Americans to this day.

I had many of these books when I was a child, and recently bought some for my eight year old son. I've been reading them to him before bed this summer (this was prompted by the fourth of July holiday, when he had no concept of what it was about). The text is large, and the words are fairly simple, but these books give an overview of the lives of the founding fathers. I've read George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, this book, and now we're now on Lewis and Clark. They are good books for about 7-9 year olds to get an idea of who the founding fathers were (our son hadn't learned much about the founding fathers in school). My son really liked the Ben Franklin book -- but then, there were a lot of interesting things Franklin did, with discussions of the Franklin stove, lightning rod, kite flying, etc. This book is definitely pro-Franklin, and all these books really set out to admire the characters in them (Napoleon and George III were called Tyrants in the Thomas Jefferson book). I think that beyond 9 or 10 years old, these books will be too basic. An eight year old could read these books fine.

As a homeschool mother, I want my child to enjoy the learning process. I have been delighted with the Step-Up series and Benjamin Franklin has been no exception. They are written in an straight forward, but not dumbed down, manner. My daughter and I got the high points of Franklin's life, as well as the ideals he stood for, in a lively, interesting format.
I would have preferred more pictures; but that's just me!

This is a great book for any child from 2nd grade to 4th grade to read. It is in large print which makes it easy for children to read. This book highlights all the main accomplishments and events of Benjamin Franklin's life. It is very interesting and will hold a young child's attention from the begining until the end of the book. I really enjoyed the way it covered his whole life, not just when he started making great inventions, like most books. It was one of my favorite books when I was in elementary school.
