by Dr. Alice von Hildebrand

Dietrich von Hildebrand, widely regarded as one of the great Catholic philosophers of the 20th century, is well-known for his numerous books, but, until this present work, not much has been known of his remarkable and inspiring life. Written by his wife, Alice, also a highly respected Catholic thinker, this is a fascinating, moving and, at times, gripping account of a truly great man of the Church who suffered much for the faith. Based on a very long "letter" Dietrich wrote to his wife late in his life, it tells his story from his glorious youth with a unique intellectual and cultural formation, his coversion to Catholisism, his great passion for truth and beauty, his extensive writing on Christian philosophy and theology, and his steadfast, determined opposition to Nazism that made him a marked man who miraculously escaped execution. A powerful biography of a relentless fighter against injustice, a devoted son of the Church, a man who had the "soul of a lion". Illustrated.

This book is a biographical insight into one of the greatest Catholics of the 20th Century. The book is one of the finest biographies I have read, because Alice is simply a marvelous writer and biographer. If there is a disappointment, it is that this ends with the von Hildebrand flight from Nazi occupied France, and does not describe the marvelous years that followed in America.
One of my favorite reads — and one that I have recommended to many. You don't have to be familiar with his philosophical work at all to appreciate this book (but perhaps you'll want to learn more about his writings after, which are brilliant). If you're interested in history, culture, the search for truth, goodness, and beauty, or simply stories of inspirational people, you'll enjoy "The Soul of a Lion" immensely.
Dietrich Von Hildebrand is my new hero, after reading this book. I knew what a profound thinker he was after reading many of his books, but the heroic life he led is impressive. He absolutely believed in his Catholic religion and showed, by example, what one can achieve. I highly recommend this and all books written by him. I also recommend books written by his wife, Alice Von Hildebrand.
It was nice to get the back story for a lot of what I had been taught about von Hildebrand.
Given my age, 89, Dutch background but World Ward II in Indonesia, this little book spoke very much to me as it pictured political situations as encountered by Christians during that time in Europe. Well written, engaging and descriptions of a man with the Soul of a Lion!
The Apotheoses of Lacspor
I found it had too much back ground about the family, not enough about the man.
This man brought many clear and concise thoughts to life!
