by Alfred Gerald Davison

This is a story of a small band of men and their families, who left their native England and spread the Gospel of industrialism to Denmark. They did so at a time when the United States of America was fighting for its independance - before and after the Napolionic Wars - before, during and after the Crimean War. They and their families grew to be among the most wealthy and influential in Denmark through their connections with ships and the sea. And after more than a hundred and fifty years of wheeling and dealing, birth, death, fortune and misfortune in the city of Helsingor (Elsinore - home of Shakespeare's "Hamlet"). There is nothing obvious to show that they have ever been there - except perhaps the solitary gravestone of Jonh Mullins, with its reflective inscription in the English language. "in memory of John Mullins Esq, of Hampshire in England. Merchant of this place, who departed this life on 13th march 1820 in the 64th year of his age. reader if thou hast a tear to spar, stop and shed it here, for here rests the noblest work of God, an honest man."
