by Thomas Moore

Few experiences stir the emotions and throw a person into crisis as illness does. If affects not only the body but also the spirit and soul. Illness is about life and death, fear and hope, love and conflict, spirit and body. And yet, the healthcare system is not structured around these considerations—our doctors and other medical professionals are not trained to deal with the whole person. Care of the Soul In Medicine is Moore’s manifesto about the future of healthcare. In this new vision of care, Moore speaks to the importance of healing a person rather than simply treating a body. He gives advice to both healthcare providers and patients for maintaining dignity and humanity. He provides spiritual guidance for dealing with feelings of mortality and threat, encouraging patients to not only take an active part in healing but also to view illness as a positive passage to new awareness. While we don’t fully understand the extent to which healing depends on attitude; it has been shown that healing needs to focus on more than the body. The future of medicine is not only in new technical developments and research discoveries; it is also in appreciating the state of soul and spirit in illness.

When I finished writing my book, "Soul Portrait: Improve Your Quality of Life by Making Aging Personal", I went surfing for books on soul and came across Moore's books titled, "Care of the Soul" and "Care of the Soul in Medicine". The latter will go with me every time I give a workshop; it is the perfect companion to "Soul Portrait". Moore speaks about restoring the soul by paying attention to the 'little, human aspects of treatment and care'. In an easy-to-read and candid approach, his examples and experiences prove it's no easy task to challenge the current ways of doing things; at the same time, he gives credit to individuals who are trying to change the current health care system and illustrates how the rest of us can help in that effort. "Care of the Soul in Medicine" should be required reading for students and workers in all helping professions. "Soul Portrait" encourages elders, caregivers, and advocates to do their part.
This is an amazing read for all. Given as gifts to three outstanding Doctors who truly practice the
"Care of the Soul in Medicine".

I did not read this, it was purchased for another. She was disappointed to find that it spoke less to her as a patient, and more to therapists.
Wow it works from inside out.
Wonderful book!
I enjoy Moore's writings and his thoughts. I often quote him in my own journals. He seems to echo so many of my own musings.
This book helped me think about the spiritual side of medicine in a whole new way. Shortly after reading it I had an appendectomy and saw first hand those who did and did not practice such principles. Marilyn J. Trechter
Highly recommend for all Healthcare professionals and hospital chaplains.
