by Peter John Cameron

Well known for his teaching, writing, and editing of Magnificat, the widely popular monthly publication containing the Scripture readings and prayers for the Mass used weekly by several hundred thousand Catholics, Fr. Peter John Cameron, O.P., offers here expert spiritual and practical help for priests, pastors and seminarians desiring to preach effectively.

Why Preach draws from the author's rich understanding of the Word of God as the challenging, encouraging, and healing presence of Christ, as well as from his own experience as both a preacher and a teacher of homiletics. With an eye focused on the works and examples of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, Father Cameron illustrates that good preaching derives from and leads to an encounter with Christ, the Word of God made Flesh, who comes to us through the Scriptures.

The objective of the book is to help preachers to think about preaching in a new, dynamic way. Its aim is to provide a fresh and helpful vision of preaching geared to deepening a preacher's appreciation of what preaching is, and the great spiritual impact that good preaching can have on its audience, so as to increase his desire and ability to preach well.

This is a Wonderful guide to the necessity of and practical and effective format of preaching the Word of God in the modern world unto the salvation of souls. It is written by the director of homiletics for the Eastern Province of the Dominican friars in the USA.The Dominicans, founded by St Dominic, are called the Order of Preachers.
One of the best guides for homilies that I have ever read. For those who have been preaching for many years, it could serve as a reminder as to what the homily is for. excellent book.
It was a little slow in getting to me. But no problems with the book.
It is basically a good book to helpa person learn about homilies and how to properly preach (content-wise).
This book is probably one of the best books I have read recently, and certainly the best book I have read on preaching. Cameron draws out the importance of good preaching and the necessary role it has in bringing people to a deeper relationship with Christ. He provides the reader with necessary insights both for the interior and exterior development of good preaching, building one's own relationship with Christ, and good insights for drawing others to that same relationship. What is most compelling about this book is that it is clear that Cameron has this relationship with Christ which he is calling others to. This serves to make his writing come alive and it gives greater strength to his exhortation to the reader.
