When fifteen-year-old Lance Covington finds an abandoned baby in the backseat of a car, he knows she's the newborn daughter of a meth addict he's been trying to help. But when police arrest him for kidnapping, Lance is thrust into a criminal world of baby trafficking and drug abuse. His mother, Barbara, looks for help from Kent Harlan---the man whom she secretly, reluctantly loves and who once helped rescue her daughter from a mess of her own. Kent flies to her aid and begins the impossible work of getting Lance out of trouble, protecting a baby who has no home, and finding help for a teenage mother hiding behind her lies. In this latest novel of suspense and family loyalty, bestselling author Terri Blackstock offers a harrowing look at drug addiction, human trafficking, and the devastating choices that can change lives forever.

I'm such a fan of Terri Blackstock, and this novel certainly didn't disappoint me! I read it out of order though, without realizing it. I can't wait to go back and read the first of the series.

Each of the characters in this book was well developed, layer after layer, in spite of the fact that I picked this up mid-series instead of reading book one first! Just like in real life, the author writes her characters to be so multifaceted, often even contradictory to themselves. I sometimes found myself thinking "that wouldn't happen!" (because I watch so much Law and Order that of course I know everything about the legal system, LOL) But from the standpoint of Barbara Covington and her son, Lance, the view was about as real as it could be. The desire to believe the best about someone you love who has been in the dragon's lair of addiction, but wrestling with distrust at the same time, is something I could very much relate to.

And from that same perspective, I think Emily and Jordan's struggle with addiction was just as real... The roller coaster of emotion, the desire to get clean, the feelings of despair and complete hopelessness... Horrifyingly realistic. Makes me glad I was never the one on that side of the monster's den.

The one thing that bugged me the most, if at all, was the romantic goofiness of Barbara and Kent. I understand the conflicting emotions, the wondering what the other is thinking, but Kent gave all new meaning to the word clueless. Barbara's feelings couldn't have been more obvious, and in some instances, she'd say things that (to me) were perfectly clear about what she wanted, and it would go completely over his head at the speed of light.

I can't say it's my favorite Blackstock book, but it kept me on the edge of my seat and ran me through the whole range of emotions.

VICIOUS CYCLE is an outstanding sequel to the first book in Ms. Blackstock's INTERVENTION Series, which portrays the heartbreaking issues of drug addiction. The suspenseful story picks up from the previous book--reintroducing many of the same memorable characters: Barbara Covington, the mother who refuses to give up on getting her daughter back, as she was before being caught up in the vicious whirlpool created by unscrupulous drug dealers whose only interest is accumulating wealth, whatever the consequences suffered by the families involved. Also back in this sequel are Ms. Covington's children--Emily, the victim, and her brother Lance; and also Detective Kent Harlan, continuing a romantic backdrop with Barbara Covington. Woven within this gripping story of suspense and faith is another unconscionable evil; i.e., the selling of innocent children into environments which jeopardize their futures and, indeed, their very lives. With this introduction, I am reprinting below my assessment of the first INTERVENTION novel written by Ms. Blackstock:

BOOK #1
Terri Blackstock's latest novel, INTERVENTION, takes the reader on a nonstop, highly suspenseful journey with a mother who adamantly refuses to let anyone or anything deter her from her commitment to help lead her daughter out of the devastating pit of drug addiction into which she has fallen. This fine book has all the elements of a superb mystery--murder, kidnapping, police chases, et al--but the heart of the story is the strength, through faith, of a widowed mother who, more than anything else, wants her daughter back, and to help restore the health and spirituality which was taken from her. Tragically, this novel depicts the serious problems--in our country and around the globe--which so many families have, unfortunately, experienced and suffered as a result of this plague of drug addiction. Ms. Blackstock's INTERVENTION may be her most meaningful and heartfelt novel, based on her acknowledgement that she and her family suffered the unthinkable pain of a daughter who fell victim to the spell of drug abuse. We've read most of Terri Blackstock's writings; all of them excellent... but this one, because of her personal experience with the serious nature of the subject, is perhaps her best and most-gripping work. Both books in this important, as well informative and entertaining series, are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
