In the twenty years since ordination, I've worked with a number of altar guilds in several congregations. Each one had presuppositions and practices which were based on hearsay and tradition, not on actual study. For many, the Lang book was a bit out of reach. The language was a bit stilted, the illustrations directly out of the 1950s.

This updated altar guild manual gives most of the information from the Lang book, but in a more modern style. In addition, it references the current hymnal, Lutheran Service Book, rather than The Lutheran Hymnal of days of yore.

It is not quite as in depth as the Lang book, but an excellent manual for those looking for practical advice.
