by John Ortberg

Without a doubt Ever "stumbled" in your faith? Wrestled with uncertainty? Wondered if you're a true believer? If the answer is yes to any of these questions―and it probably is―you have reason to celebrate. In this candid book based on his own struggle with doubt, John Ortberg traces the line between belief and unbelief and finds that it's less a dividing line between hostile camps than a razor's edge that runs through every soul. His findings point toward the relief of being totally honest. Doubt … Questions … Honest faith … Outrageous hope … It's a chain reaction that can actually strengthen our relationship with God, and that, says Ortberg, is cause for celebration.

X-MEN
Honest discussion. Thought provoking. Insightful. Wise. Funny. And liberating. Ortberg's unique point of view (a born-again shrink!) hits you in the heart and the head all at once and puts a Kingdom perspective on what feels like a fleshly reaction to our lives and circumstances. The Bible is full of doubters who were defined by what they believed, not by their momentary lapses of judgment or faith. That's all of us. We need to know who we are in Christ despite our failings and feelings, and Ortberg has a practical touch that reminds us, here and now, about the spiritual truth of our identity, even as we wrestle with our own doubts. Jacob's redemption came when he wrestled with God "and prevailed" even as God knocked him to his knees. So does ours.

We are called to contend for our faith, not for our point of view, and for most of us, we have to do it every day. Real faith should challenge everyone of us everyday. We have to come to grips with what we believe constantly. That challenge isn't a disqualifier, it's the prerequisite for true faith. Jesus asked his disciples "Who do YOU say I am." He's asking us this too, daily, especially as we look at the disappointments and troubles in our lives. That's contending. That's the path to standing firm in our faith.

Ortberg's book is like the trainer's towel in the boxer's corner between rounds, fanning us and cooling us off and encouraging us to get back into the ring for another round. And reminding us we can go the distance even if we think we're done. Because He is never done with us.

Great book.

A great book for those who have spiritual doubts - which includes all those who are honest about their spiritual life!
I read "The Me I Want to Be," so I thought I'd try this one. It's not a bad book, but it was kind of forgettable. I bought it about a year ago and can't really remember what it was about! I would recommend "The Me I Want to Be" over this book.
