by Mark Allan Powell

Today's biblical scholars study the Gospel of Matthew with a wide variety of methods that yield diverse and exciting insights. Methods for Matthew offers a primer on six exegetical approaches that have proved to be especially useful and popular. In each case, a prominent scholar describes the principles and procedures of a particular approach and then demonstrates how that approach works in practice, applying it to a well-known text from Matthew's Gospel. As an added bonus, each of the chosen texts is treated to three different interpretations so that the reader can easily compare the results obtained through one approach to those obtained through other approaches. The reader will learn a great deal about two stories from Matthew ("the healing of a centurion's servant" and "the resurrection of Jesus") and the reader will also learn enough about each of these six approaches to understand their function in biblical studies today.

A great resource for students and lay persons alike to view various interpretations of Matthew. While this does not run the gamut of all methods, it highlights the major ones. For the price (paperback) I would highly recommend for anyone interested in broad strokes of interpretation when reading Matthew. Ignore the poor ratings for the electronic editions, schools that rely solely on eBooks are committing to fast and too hard to a tool that might not be as versatile or reliable as a written text. And if it is missing the table of contents, make a paper copy - easy fix. Regardless, this book has great overviews of the Historical Critical Method; Literary Approaches; Feminist Criticism; Historical Jesus Studies; Social Scientific Approaches; and Postcolonial Criticism. While this book will eventually become outdated (especially with the current speed of scholarship) its current version is an excellent source.
I used for a class and from all indication seems a great resource.
This is stupid! No table of contents for a quick link to chapters! Does the publisher have any idea how professors and students find the chapters they need to read, besides mindlessly flipping page by page in search of a particular chapter? Through location? Stupid! Fix this so we can access this otherwise fine resource! My classes are going all if publisher makes this too much of hassle, just know that professors like me will opt for other resources!
